BRAKE REPAIR IN MATTHEWS, NC

Your brakes are the one system you cannot afford to guess about. At Harris Cars Service Center we inspect the whole braking system, show you what we found, and quote the repair before we pick up a wrench. Pads, rotors, calipers, hoses and fluid on domestic and foreign cars, trucks and SUVs.

SIGNS YOU NEED BRAKE REPAIR

  • A high-pitched squeal when you brake. Most pads have a metal wear tab that squeals once the friction material gets thin.
  • Grinding or growling, which usually means the pad is gone and metal is cutting into the rotor.
  • A pulsing brake pedal or a steering wheel that shakes when you stop, a sign of warped or unevenly worn rotors.
  • A soft, spongy or sinking pedal, which can point to air or moisture in the brake fluid or a leak.
  • The car pulling to one side under braking, often a sticking caliper or a collapsed brake hose.
  • The brake warning light or ABS light on the dash.

HOW IT WORKS

Brakes wear in a predictable order. Pads go first, then rotors, and if pads are left too long the caliper pistons over-extend and start to stick. Catching wear early is the difference between a quick pad replacement and a bigger bill for rotors and calipers. That is why we measure your pads at every visit and note the reading on your invoice, so you can see the trend and plan ahead instead of getting surprised. We also check the parking brake, the brake booster and the ABS system for stored faults, because a pedal problem is not always at the wheels. If your vehicle has electronic parking brakes or brake-by-wire systems, we use a scan tool to service them correctly rather than forcing parts apart.

  1. 1 Road test to feel the pedal and listen for noise under real stopping conditions.
  2. 2 Wheels off: we measure pad thickness and rotor thickness against the manufacturer minimum, and check calipers, slides, hoses and lines for leaks or binding.
  3. 3 Brake fluid is tested for moisture content, since old fluid boils sooner and corrodes the system from the inside.
  4. 4 You get a written estimate with what is urgent, what can wait, and what it costs. Nothing is replaced without your approval.
  5. 5 We replace pads and resurface or replace rotors as needed, clean and lubricate the slide pins and hardware, and bleed the system if the fluid is due.
  6. 6 A final road test confirms a firm pedal and quiet, straight stops before the car is handed back.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often do brake pads need replacing?

It depends heavily on how and where you drive. Stop-and-go traffic on Independence Boulevard wears pads far faster than highway miles. Many vehicles land somewhere between 30,000 and 70,000 miles. We measure pad thickness at every oil change so you get warning well before they are gone.

Do I need new rotors every time I get new pads?

Not always. If the rotors are still above the minimum thickness and are not warped or deeply scored, they can often be resurfaced or reused. We measure them and tell you which option makes sense rather than replacing them by default.

Is it safe to keep driving if my brakes are grinding?

Grinding usually means metal on metal, which damages the rotor and reduces stopping power. Get it looked at as soon as you can. Waiting typically turns a pad job into a pad and rotor job.

Can you tell me what is wrong before I commit to anything?

Yes. Every brake repair starts with an inspection and a written estimate. You decide what gets done.
