SUSPENSION & STEERING REPAIR IN MATTHEWS, NC

Your suspension does more than smooth out bumps. It keeps the tires planted for braking and cornering. Worn shocks, struts, ball joints and tie rods make a car wander, bounce and stop longer, and they wear tires out early. Harris Cars Service Center inspects the whole system and replaces only what is actually worn.

SIGNS YOU NEED SUSPENSION & STEERING

  • Clunking or knocking over bumps, potholes or speed humps.
  • The car bounces several times after a dip, or the nose dives hard when you brake.
  • Loose, vague or wandering steering.
  • The vehicle leans heavily in corners.
  • Uneven or cupped tire wear.
  • Fluid leaking from a shock or strut, or one corner of the car sitting lower than the others.

HOW IT WORKS

Suspension parts wear slowly, which is why most drivers do not notice until something clunks. Shocks and struts control how fast the springs compress and rebound. When they wear out, the tires lose contact with the road for a split second over every bump, which lengthens stopping distances and makes the car feel floaty. Ball joints and tie rod ends are pivot points that connect the wheels to the car. When they get loose, the steering feels vague and the wheel angles shift as you drive, wearing tires unevenly. A worn ball joint is also a safety item: if it separates, the wheel can collapse. We check every joint for play, show you anything that is worn, and explain which repairs are urgent and which can be planned for later.

  1. 1 A road test over rough pavement helps us hear and feel where the noise or looseness comes from.
  2. 2 On the lift, we inspect shocks, struts, springs, control arms, bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, sway bar links and wheel bearings.
  3. 3 Steering components are checked for play and power steering for leaks.
  4. 4 You get a written estimate that separates safety items from parts that are wearing but can wait.
  5. 5 We replace the worn parts and, where the repair affects geometry, perform a wheel alignment.
  6. 6 A final road test confirms the noise is gone and the car tracks straight.

Repairs are backed by the Harris Cars parts and labor warranty. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long do shocks and struts last?

Many last 50,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on roads and load. They wear gradually, so drivers often do not notice until the new ones go in.

Do I need an alignment after suspension work?

If we replace struts, tie rods or control arms, yes. Those parts set the wheel angles, and skipping the alignment can wear out a new set of tires quickly.

Should struts be replaced in pairs?

Yes, on the same axle. A new strut on one side and a worn one on the other makes the car handle unevenly.

What is that clunk over bumps?

Common causes are worn sway bar links, ball joints, strut mounts or control arm bushings. A lift inspection pinpoints which one.
