TRANSMISSION REPAIR & SERVICE IN MATTHEWS, NC

Transmission trouble is stressful because people assume the worst. Many shifting problems are not a failed transmission at all. They can be low or burnt fluid, a faulty sensor, a solenoid or a software issue. Harris Cars Service Center diagnoses the real cause first, so you only pay for a major repair if you actually need one.

SIGNS YOU NEED TRANSMISSION REPAIR

  • Harsh, delayed or slipping shifts, or the engine revving without the car picking up speed.
  • A delay before the car moves when you shift into Drive or Reverse.
  • Red or brown fluid under the car, or fluid that smells burnt.
  • Whining, humming or clunking noises that change with speed or gear.
  • The car stuck in one gear, often called limp mode.
  • A check engine or transmission warning light.

HOW IT WORKS

Automatic transmissions rely on clean fluid at the right pressure to shift smoothly. As fluid ages it loses its friction properties and its ability to carry heat away, and heat is the main thing that kills transmissions. Short trips in Charlotte-area traffic, towing, and hot summers all add up. Many modern transmissions are also computer controlled, so a failed speed sensor, a sticking shift solenoid or outdated software can cause symptoms that feel mechanical but are not. Continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) and dual-clutch gearboxes each have their own fluids and service procedures, and using the wrong fluid can cause damage. Whatever you drive, we follow the manufacturer's procedure for checking and filling the fluid, and we tell you plainly what we found and what it will cost before any work begins.

  1. 1 We check the fluid level and condition. Color and smell tell us a lot about internal wear.
  2. 2 A scan reads transmission codes and live data such as fluid temperature, line pressure and shift solenoid commands.
  3. 3 A road test reproduces the problem under the conditions you describe.
  4. 4 We inspect for leaks at the pan, cooler lines, seals and axles, and check mounts and linkage.
  5. 5 You get a written explanation of the cause and the options, from a fluid service to a repair or replacement, with prices for each.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often should transmission fluid be changed?

It varies widely by vehicle. Some manufacturers recommend every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, others claim lifetime fluid. Heat, towing and stop-and-go traffic all break fluid down faster. We check your manual and the condition of the fluid and tell you honestly whether it is due.

Will a fluid change fix my slipping transmission?

Sometimes, if the cause is low or degraded fluid. If there is internal mechanical wear, new fluid will not reverse it. That is why we diagnose before recommending anything.

Do you work on CVTs?

Yes. CVTs need their own specific fluid and procedures, and we service and diagnose them.

Do I need a full rebuild?

Not necessarily. Many problems are solved with a sensor, solenoid, seal or software update. We only recommend a rebuild or replacement when testing shows it is needed.
